Tips on Tuesday: Ask-a-Recruiter

Our new series, “Ask a Recruiter,” gives all of you out there the opportunity to ask all of the questions you’ve always wanted to know on hiring, interviewing, the job hunt, recruiters, career tips and more! In return, one of our experienced recruiters will answer these questions on our blog each week. This week’s question came from a candidate on LinkedIn who sent this in:

Do you use the internet to screen candidates? For example, do you look at Facebook profiles?

Answer:

Here is the answer by Anthony Moser, an Account Manager at SkillStorm.

In my experience in recruiting and account management, the Internet is the one tool that I use on a daily basis.  Whether it’s sourcing for candidates on job boards or other avenues, the majority of my time is spent looking for candidates on the Internet.  In this day and age, everyone is so accessible online that you can either present yourself in a professional manner or set yourself up for disaster.

Personally, I don’t typically check candidate’s Facebook profiles but I know that depending on what you have posted it can definitely be detrimental in some cases.  Most of my online profiling will be done on LinkedIn as opposed to Facebook. However, if I really have some questions about a candidate, I may reference both areas.  I think the key take away is this:  Make sure whatever you are posting online about yourself is a positive portrayal of your character because employers will reference all avenues to get insight into a candidate’s personality.

Have a question you want answered? There are a number of ways to do it!

-          Post your question on our Discussion board on LinkedIn

-          E-mail PR@SkillStorm.com

-          Tweet your question to @SkillStorm

-          Post it on our Facebook wall

Remember, all questions will remain anonymous when posted! Check back every week for answers to your questions!
