As companies hire more and more temporary workers, it’s increasingly important to get noticed by recruiters who work with hiring managers to fill these positions. There are thousands of job seekers out there who contact recruiters every day, so how can you stand out and get a recruiter’s attention over the others who are applying for the same jobs? There are several steps you can take to increase your chances of getting noticed, beating out the competition and landing an interview!
- Know what you want. Try to establish a clearly stated job objective. If you want recruiters to approach you with job openings that you’re interested in, they first need to have a clear idea of what you are looking for, how far you will travel for work, what you are willing to do, etc. Knowing this information will save both you and the recruiter time and energy in the job seeking process.
- Think about results – not just skills. Instead of just listing your job skills, describe the benefits and results of your previous performance. For each permanent job or staffing assignment you’ve completed, develop a list of major accomplishments. How did your actions in that role benefit the company? Keep in mind that most companies value workers who enhance profits and save time and money.

CareerBuilder Releases Q2 U.S. Job Forecast - Statistics and Trends Show Optimism for Future of Hiring in 2010
CareerBuilder and USA Today released a new quarterly job forecast this month, featuring several trends and statistics that reveal an optimistic outlook for the quarter. The report shows a rise in temporary hiring, which can be a good leading indicator for stability in the market and the creation of more permanent jobs later on. For the third consecutive quarter, more employers also reported that they expect to increase headcount in the next three months, while fewer will cut staff. Further, 23 percent of employers intend to add full-time, permanent employees
and 64 percent don’t plan to change their headcount. Only 8 percent reported that they plan to decrease headcount.
Several featured employment trends include:
- Contract workers: Hesitant to accelerate hiring of permanent staff, companies are employing temporary workers to help fill productivity gaps. One-quarter of employers anticipate hiring contract workers or freelancers in the second quarter. Thirteen percent said they are likely to hire these workers on a permanent basis.
- Social media: Nine percent of employers plan to hire a new employee in the second quarter to focus on social media. An additional 13 percent plan to add social media management to a current employee’s responsibilities.
- Bilingual workers: Employers are diversifying their workforce to appeal to broader consumer segments, including building bilingual teams. One-third (33 percent) said they plan to hire bilingual candidates in the second quarter. Half (50 percent) said that if they had two equally qualified candidates, they would be more inclined to hire the bilingual candidate.
- Compensation: Forty percent of employers expect there will be no change in salary levels in the second quarter. Thirty-seven percent expect an increase of 3 percent or less. Thirteen percent expect their average changes will be between 4 and 10 percent and two percent predict 11 percent of more.
Four percent anticipate a decrease in salaries.

Do you have any advice for me so that I at least get an interview? I would like to find entry-level jobs that fit my experience so that I can practice the goals of their mission statements as their employee.
A: Sometimes, candidates who submit their resume online may receive an e-mail stating that their “resume isn’t exactly in line with what the company is seeking.” However, this rejection could have been easily overcome with a more strategic approach. How? Candidates who form a true partnership with recruiters will be provided with access to new professional networks as well as information that isn’t available on the internet. This will increase opportunity for success in a highly competitive market.
