Job Search – Marketing your ‘Soft Skills’ – Part II
In follow-up to Part I of “Marketing your Soft Skills,” I trust that you have now taken some time to consider your soft skills, and what you have to offer your next employer, in concert with your professional credentials.
As I mentioned previously, more importance is definitely being placed on a candidate’s soft skills. In some cases, a candidate with less experience will get the position due to his or her personality and effective communications style, demonstrated during the course of the interview(s).
The downside of this situation is, of course, remuneration, as it would be adjusted due to the difference in the educational and professional requirements previously outlined for the position. However, the fact is that the candidate is now gainfully employed and will learn and move forward when the opportune time arrives, or is proactively sought after.
IT Hiring Increases over 25,000 Jobs in 2010, Renews Optimism for Industry
A recent headline from Computerworld reveals that prospects are looking up for IT employment and point to a steady uptick in 2010. IT employment grew a reported 0.37%, or 14,000 jobs, from January to February, according to the Techserve Alliance, a group that analyzes U.S Labor Department unemployment data.
In January alone, IT employment increased 12,900 jobs.The new data could reflect an increase in demand, leading the trend in a positive direction for IT hiring.

Q: If you contact a staffing recruiter weekly, as you were suggested to do when you first registered, and keep on receiving the same e-mail reply “We’ll let you know when we find a suitable assignment/project” – is this an indicator that the recruiter is not interested any longer in providing you work, or is he/she really genuine on not finding something suitable? My hunch is that the recruiter is not interested.

A: Thank you for your question. First off, I don’t think there is ever a time when a recruiter doesn’t want to provide work for a candidate. I think most of the time when a recruiter replies with, “We’ll let you know when we find a suitable assignment/project,” they are being genuine and don’t have work for that person at that time but that doesn’t mean they won’t have work for you soon. As recruiters, we would love to put everyone we contact to work, but we know that’s not immediately possible. I think it is always best to contact a recruiter by phone, after uploading your resume to their site, so that you may have a conversation instead of multiple emails with multiple questions.
